Arch with own hands

Arch is one of the oldest ways of decorating doorways in a room. Now the arches again become very popular, being used both to expand the space of small rooms and to zoning in large rooms.

The door arch is not that difficult to make with your own hands from improvised and easily accessible building materials: metal profiles and plasterboard sheets.

1. First it is necessary to compose the design of the arch and make its full-size model of cardboard. This will allow, first, to estimate how an arch fits into the interior of a room, and secondly, quickly and simply to make all the measurements necessary for the project, without additional calculations, which are required for the project on a reduced scale.
2. The next stage of mounting the arch in the apartment with your own hands is the production of a frame made of metal profile. It is best to use a U-shaped profile for these purposes, which has a suitable degree of rigidity. Special scissors for metal should be made on it cuts from both sides at a distance of 1 cm from each other. This will allow it to be shaped in accordance with the developed project. It is necessary to make the second such profile for the opposite side of the arch.
3. The most important stage in making the arch with your own hands is the preparation of a curved profile of plasterboard that will become the inner side of the arch. There are two methods for this. The first is to make longitudinal incisions on one side of the gypsum plaster stripe after 1 cm and bend the desired shape along these notches.
4. The second: the sheet should be abundantly moistened with water, and then a special roller rolls over it. The punctured gypsum cardboard bends in the desired shape, and then leaves to dry for no less than 12 hours.
5. The installation of the arch is carried out in the following way: first straight sections of the metal profile are strengthened, and then bent. They are screwed to the wall with screws.
6. Now, the straight parts of the arch are fastened to the frame on each side of the doorway. They can also be cut from gypsum board or use sheets of MDF. In order not to be mistaken with the form, it is enough to apply a template from cardboard. After fixing the flat parts, the inner, curved is installed. It is fastened with walls by metal corners and screws.

Decoration of an arch

After the arch is assembled, you can proceed with its decoration. All the seams must be pre-treated with putty and covered with a special mesh with a serpent. Then it can be painted, wallpapered or decorated in other ways.
