In the history of the world, many legends about ancient states have survived, the existence of which has not been confirmed by science. One of these mythical countries, known from ancient manuscripts, is called Hyperborea or Arctida. It is believed that the Russian people came from here.
Hyperborea - the birthplace of the ancient Slavs
Many mysterious authors tried to give the mysterious continent localization. There is no confirmation of this, but in theory, just from these lands came the Slavs, and Hyperborea is the birthplace of all Russian peoples. The northern polar continent connected the lands of Eurasia and the New World. Different authors and researchers find traces of ancient civilization in places such as:
- Greenland;
- Kola Peninsula;
- Karelia;
- The Ural Mountains;
- the Taimyr peninsula.
Hyperborea is a myth or a reality?
Many people, not even profound in history, are interested in the question: did Hyperborea actually exist? For the first time the mention of it appeared in ancient sources. They were described by various historians and writers from Hesiod to Nostradamus:
- Pliny the Elder spoke of the Hyperboreans as inhabitants of the Arctic Circle, where "the sun shines for six months".
- The poet Alkey in the hymn to Apollo pointed to the proximity of the "solar god" with this people, which was subsequently confirmed by the historian Diodorus of Sicily.
- Hecatei Abdersky from Egypt told the legend of a tiny island "on the Ocean against the Celtic country".
- Aristotle united the so-called Hyperborean peoples and Scythian Rus.
- In addition to the Greeks and Romans, mystical lands and its inhabitants were mentioned among the Indians ("the people living under the Polar Star"), Iranians, Chinese, in Germanic epics, etc.
Conversations about the mythical country could not be ignored by modern historians and scholars. They have put forward and continue to advance their own versions about the Hyperboreans and their culture, to compare facts and draw conclusions. According to some historians, Arktida is the foremother of the whole world culture, because in the past its lands were a very favorable place for human life. There was a subtropical climate, attracting prominent minds, who were constantly in contact with the Greeks and Romans.
Where did Hyperborea disappear?
The hypothetical history of Hyperborea, as a highly developed civilization, counts several millennia. If you believe in ancient writings, the way of life of the Hyperboreans was simple and democratic, they lived as a single family, settled along water bodies, and their activities (art, crafts, creativity) contributed to the disclosure of human spirituality. Today, only the north of modern Russia is the remains of that part of the land that was once occupied by the Hyperboreans. If we compare all known facts together, we can assume that Arktida ceased to exist:
- In connection with climate change. And the peoples inhabiting the continent migrated to the south.
- According to Plato, the disappeared civilization of Hyperborea ceased to exist as a result of a disastrous war with an equally powerful power - Atlantis.
Myths about Hyperborea
Since the existence of civilization is not scientifically proven, one can speak of it only theoretically, drawing information from ancient sources. About Arktide there are many legends.
- One of the most interesting myths says that Apollo himself , the Sun god , traveled to her every 19 years. Residents sang songs of praise to him, and Apollo made two Hyperboreans his wise men.
- The second myth connects mystical lands with modern peoples of the north, but even some modern studies prove that there once existed Hyperborea in the north of Eurasia, and Slavs came from there.
- Another and most incredible legend is the war of Atlantis and Hyperborea, which was allegedly conducted with the use of nuclear weapons.
Hyperborea - historical facts
According to the conclusions of historians, the civilization of Hyperborea existed 15-20 millennia ago - then the ridges (Mendeleev and Lomonosov) rose above the surface of the Arctic Ocean. There was no ice, the water in the sea was warm, which is proved by paleontologists. To confirm the existence of the disappeared continent can only be experienced. That is, to find traces of the stay of hyperboreans on earth, artifacts, monuments and ancient maps and such evidence is available.
- English navigator Gerard Mercator in 1595 issued a map, probably based on some ancient knowledge. On it, he portrayed the coast of the North Ocean and the legendary Arctide in the middle. The mainland was an archipelago of several islands that shared wide rivers.
- In 1922, the Russian expedition of Alexander Barchenko found on the Kola Peninsula artfully processed stones, oriented around the countries of the world, as well as a mangled manhole. The finds belonged to an even more ancient period than the Egyptian civilization.

Scientists are stingy at the description of the Arctic, and the evidence of the researchers is not numerous and not taken seriously, so Hyperborea remains not the only one, but one of the most recognizable mythical continents, the mystery of which continues to worry humanity.
