Stephen Soderbergh: "Cinematography is for me as a sport, and teamwork"

American film director, screenwriter and producer Stephen Soderbergh has long established himself as a multi-faceted and sometimes fantastically original professional. Each of his new paintings surprises and leaves his mark on the world of cinema. The new thriller "Not in itself", not so long ago released in hire, was no exception. The film is interesting not only for the plot, the main message of which coincided with the erupting sexual scandal in Hollywood, but also an unusual approach to the shootings: the whole picture was shot on iPhone.

IPhone instead of camera

When watching "Not in yourself" there is no doubt that the picture was filmed in a classic way on the camera. As Stephen Soderbergh, who acted in this project not only as a director, but as an operator, he was able so cleverly to shoot an ordinary film for an ordinary iPhone? In his interview, the cinematographer told about the nuances of the work:

"All the problems that arose could be solved. Sometimes I was too impatient, and it complicated the process a little. As for technical wagons, I can say that the main one was a sensitive camera, which reacts very subtly to vibrations. At the same time, the movement is limited. BeastGrip helped us to create such minicells, inside of which the phone is attached using a tripod. We hung small weights on them and used them as stabilizers for shooting. We shot on three phones, the memory of each of which was 256 gigabytes. I was constantly afraid that there would not be enough memory, but in the end, it still remained. In principle, from the very beginning, I considered all possible complications and opportunities. It is always important to know what you can count on and then not waste time regretting the limitations that have arisen. I was largely inspired by the "Mandarin" by Sean Baker. I really liked the film and I immediately noticed that this work finally dispelled the myth of the unconventional way of shooting. But in the case of Mandarin, the choice of shooting was due to the budget, and I deliberately chose this option, although I confess that the choice specifically for the iPhone was accidental. "

"Farewell titles" delayed

A few years ago, the director announced that he was going to leave the cinema and devote himself entirely to theater and television. What influenced Soderberg's decision to continue his work on the films? Whatever the reasons, he is guided, the loyal viewer is certainly grateful to him. Here's what the director told about it:

"In this case, the inspiring factor was the amazing man, producer Arnon Milch. Having released "Brazil" in his time, he told the whole film community that he intended to reach great heights. I remember, I then thought: "He's really cool!". He is a true professional, he understands all the subtleties of work and interaction with the director. In fact, we kept the script of the film in secret, but the son of Arnon, Michael, somehow got it and began to figure out what we were planning. Subsequently, he even admitted that Arnon asked him in any way to get us to cooperate with them. "

"British dominance"

The main role in the thriller is played by British actress Claire Foy, known to the audience for the films "Time of the Witches", "Skull and Bones" and the television series "Little Dorrit": "

"Claire is a unique actress. She succeeds in any role. It is something fascinating and you want to look at it, and the viewer also feels it. I often hear in America about the overwhelming influence of the British in the film industry, but this is all complete nonsense. Many actors hear such accusations in their address, and then, like Daniel Kalui, they are nominated for "Best Actor". All in the end the viewer decides, and the main thing here is the actors' play. If you stick to this version, then soon the directors will not be able to work properly, because they will be limited to choosing only specific actors and actresses. "

"Back to the Future"

The first feature-length film, Sex, Lies and Video, premiered in 1989, brought Stephen Soderbergh the Golden Palm Branch and the Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay. The young artist was noted by the jury members for a new look at the social and psychological changes in society. I wonder what impression the picture would have made today, taking into account the changes in relations between men and women over the past several decades?

"This picture, first of all, about the use by people of new technologies to limit their personal lives from a curious society. It seems to me that this has nothing to do with gender issues. The modern world has become much more vicious. And if you look back at the actions of the protagonists of the picture today, comparing with everything that can happen now with your child, they become not so terrible and terrible as they might seem then. If we are talking about this film, I will say that the British company Criterion is going to release it again in the rental and I hope that it will surely stand the test of time. "

Source of strength

Soderbergh works a lot, quickly and always productively. This is said by colleagues in the "shop", and actors, and fans of the director. Only in the last year he released two paintings, a series and several projects as a producer. Soderbergh himself admits that he sometimes does not know what to answer to inquiries about the source of his boundless potential:

"People often ask me what fuel I'm working on, and I do not know what to answer. In fact, I know that creating a movie is a labor-intensive teamwork and I respect this work. General diligence is always more important than individual efforts. I realized that the faster I work, the better I get. If I start digging and analyzing, it will only get worse. At the beginning of my career, I decided for myself that cinema is for me as a sport. And this is my strength. "
