The motherboard is available for each computer . And in this board there is an important chip called CMOS, in which the system settings, BIOS parameters and other information are stored. And that all this important information does not disappear even after turning off the power of the computer, the chip is powered by a special battery installed on the motherboard.
As with any other battery, the battery for the motherboard sooner or later sits down, and it needs to be changed. In order not to carry the computer into the service for the sake of replacement, you can figure out where the battery on the motherboard is located and independently perform all the necessary manipulations. And to buy the right battery model, you need to know its exact characteristics.
Labeling of batteries for the motherboard
With what you need a battery on the motherboard and that you can replace it yourself, we sorted it out. But, it turns out, there are several types of batteries installed on the motherboard. It:
- CR2025, where 20 mm is the diameter, the thickness is 2.5 mm, and the capacity is 160 mAh;
- CR2032, with a similar diameter of 20 mm, a thickness of 3.2 mm and a capacity of 225 mAh;
- CR2035, diameter - all the same 20 mm, thickness - 3,5 mm, capacity - 280 mAh.
It is important to purchase a battery with the same labeling, which was indicated on the one that was on the board when buying a computer. The other will simply not suit you. So, if there was a battery with 2032 numbers on the motherboard, the thinner one will not stay in the socket and will not be able to touch the contacts.
How much battery does the motherboard have?
Batteries on the board enough for a pretty decent time - from 2 to 5 years. At the same time, keep in mind that when the computer is permanently off, the battery sits faster than when it is running. And if the battery sits down, then all your individual settings will "fly off", and after the replacement you have to restore everything from the beginning.
Symptoms of the fact that the battery on the computer's motherboard will soon be sitting next:
- on a computer, time is regularly lost;
- the appearance of the unload window changes;
- at the beginning of the download, a message or a sentence is displayed on the screen to press the key to continue the download;

- the error messages are displayed on the screen, special attention should be paid to such messages: "CMOS setup error", "Memory control error", "CMOS read error".
Battery replacement on the motherboard
To replace batteries yourself, you do not need special tools or special knowledge. It's pretty simple. Take the Phillips screwdriver and tweezers, turn off the computer and disconnect it, disconnect all wires from the system unit.
To get to the motherboard, you have to remove the side cover of the system unit. If access to the motherboard will interfere with the video card, you have to remove it. Work either in an anti-static bracelet, or always hold the second hand behind the computer case.
Gently pull the motherboard out of the connector, look carefully at the location of the battery, without removing it, or, even better, take a photo. Then it will help you to correctly determine the polarity when installing a new battery.
Press the lock on the side of the battery and tweeze the battery that pops up from the connector. In its place, install a new one, observing the polarity and collect the computer back.
Take out the battery and do not rush to throw it into the urn . It contains compounds of heavy metals, which are harmful to the environment. Take it to a specialized reception point for proper disposal.
