Burgas - tourist attractions

In the east of Bulgaria , on the picturesque shores of the Black Sea is the fourth largest city in the country - Burgas. The beauty and uniqueness of the nature of these places attracts thousands of tourists every year.

1. The Burgas Sea Park

In Burgas along the coast of the sea extends the Marine Park - a popular place for walking and resting locals and tourists. Recently it has been completely renovated and landscaped. Here you can relax on the benches in the shade of trees, admire sculptures and monuments. In the Summer Open Theater of the park you can watch theatrical productions and take part in musical evenings. There are regularly held different festivals.

There are playgrounds for children in the park, and adults can visit cafes and restaurants. It offers a beautiful view of the Bay of Bourgas, and you can go down the beautiful stairs to the beach or go straight to the city center.

2. Burgas Lakes

To the natural attractions of Burgas include unique large lakes: Atanasovskoe, Pomorie, Madren and Burgas. All of them are partially or entirely natural reserves. Populations of birds arriving here are of great importance for ornithologists, and in the coastal zones of lakes more than 250 species of valuable plants have been found.

In Atanasovskoye and Pomorie lakes, salt and medicinal muds are extracted for health resorts, and Mandren Lake is a storehouse for fresh water. The lake attracts tourists with fishing and hunting, as well as the ruins of the Pyrgos Fortress and the Debelt Museum.

Burgas Lake, known as Lake Vaja, is the largest natural lake in Bulgaria. More than 20 fish species and 254 species of birds were found on the territory of the "Vaya" reserve in the west of the lake, of which 9 are endangered species.

3. The ancient settlement "Akve Kalide"

The ancient settlement "Akve Kalide" (Ternopolis) is an archaeological monument called the Burgas mineral baths. The healing properties of hot springs have been known to native inhabitants long ago. In 1206 the resort was destroyed, and only after 4 centuries the Turkish sultan rebuilt the bath, which is used today.

Excavations and restoration are being carried out on the territory of the ancient settlement. In the summer of 2013, new finds were found at the excavations, including a fragment of a bronze mace, a silver medallion from the 11th century with the image of St. George and a gold earring of the period of the Ottoman Empire, exquisitely decorated with pearls.

4. Archaeological Museum of Burgas

The Archaeological Museum is located in the former gymnasium of Bourgas. Here you can see the rich heritage of the region by exhibits from the IV-V millennium BC. up to the 15th century.

5. Ethnographic Museum of Burgas

The ethnographic museum presents a large collection of traditional costumes, ritual attributes and objects of everyday life of the peoples of this region. The interior of the traditional Burgas house of the 19th century is reconstructed on the first floor of the museum. Temporary expositions are exhibited in the spacious foyer.

6. Natural and Scientific Museum of Burgas

The Natural Science Museum presents exhibits telling about the geology of the whole earth and the region, its flora and fauna. It exhibited more than 1200 exhibits: insects and reptiles, fish, plants of the Strandzha district.

7. Religious sights of Burgas

The Cathedral of St. Cyril and St. Methodius in Burgas was completed in the early 20th century, with the participation of the creators of the Slavic alphabet Cyril and Methodius. The temple is famous for its beautiful carved iconostasis, frescoes and beautiful stained-glass windows.

The Armenian church, built in 1855, still gathers the largest number of parishioners today. Situated in the immediate vicinity of the Bulgaria Hotel, the church is one of the oldest buildings in Bourgas and a cultural monument.
