Sights of Kharkov

Kharkov is a large city in the east of Ukraine, founded around 1654. Kharkov was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic until the Great Patriotic War. And because of the former capital status and thanks to the rich history of attractions in Kharkov a large number. But many visitors to the city do not have enough time to see all of its beauty. What to see in Kharkov?

  1. Freedom Square is the main square of the city. It impresses with its size, being the sixth largest square in Europe. Its construction was carried out in the 20-ies of the last century. All cultural and political events, as well as concerts and parades are held here.
  2. Pokrovsky Cathedral and Monastery . Speaking of what to see in Kharkov from the sights, it is impossible not to mention the Intercession Cathedral. The building of the cathedral is the oldest surviving in the city. A baroque cathedral was built and consecrated in 1689. It is located on the territory of the monastery of the same name, one of the oldest in Ukraine, founded later in the 18th century.
  3. The Assumption Cathedral is also designed in the Baroque style. Its belltower, whose height is 89 m, is the tallest building in the city.
  4. Annunciation cathedral . Tourists in Kharkov should definitely look at this magnificent architectural ensemble of the new Byzantine style. The cathedral was built in 1901 instead of the old temple, located in the same place since 1655. Rich decor and unusual masonry highlight the decoration of the cathedral.
  5. The "Mirror Stream" fountain is one of the most interesting places in Kharkov and is considered a visiting card of the city. It was built in 1947 and is dedicated to the victory of Soviet troops in the Great Patriotic War. The fountain is located near the Opera House.
  6. Shevchenko Garden is the oldest park of the city, founded in 1804 by the founder of the Kharkov University VN. Karazin. According to the residents of the city, the garden is the best place for rest in Kharkov. In the park you can find many interesting monuments. Among them is a monument to Taras Shevchenko - a famous Ukrainian writer, created in 1935 and a monument to Karazin in 1907. Also in the garden is the entrance to the city zoo.
  7. City Zoo . Among those attractions that you can see in Kharkov with children, you can identify the state zoological park. This zoo is one of the oldest in Ukraine and in Russia. It was open to visitors in 1903 and in pre-war time it was about 5000 animals. However, almost all of them died during the war. At the moment in the zoo of Kharkov you can see 19 animals that are listed in the Red Book.
  8. The "Cascade" fountain was built in the Shevchenko Garden for the 300th anniversary of the city, in 1955. Previously, on this same place was a large staircase. The fountain is also made in the form of steps, over which water flows.
  9. Gosprom . Among the sights of Kharkov, it is worth noting the house of the State Industry, located on Liberty Square. The building is a symbol of the architectural style of constructivism and the first in the Soviet Union high-rise construction of their reinforced concrete. In pre-war time, the Council of People's Commissars of Ukraine was located in the State Industrial Committee. Now the building has regional authorities and a large number of office buildings.
  10. The cable car of the city ​​is both entertainment and mode of transport. Its length is almost 1.5 km. And from the highest point in 30 m there are picturesque views of the beautiful places of Kharkov.
