Fritillaria - planting and care

Some species of this plant have a motley coloring, very similar to the chessboard. This is what gave the name of the flower. According to other sources, the name of the plant was obtained not so much for coloring, as for the shape of a flower resembling a vessel. One way or another, flowers of friillillaria are now found in flower gardens more and more often, because the beautiful shape and bright juicy bud color will decorate any composition.

Fritillaria: landing

The main feature of the planting material is unprotected flakes, which must remain whole and juicy. If there is any damage in the form of creases, cuts or rot, they will help that the bulbs dry up and die. All this should be taken into account when buying planting material.

For landing, we select a place on a small hill, so that there will never be a stagnation of water. If there is no such place, make a mound artificially. Before landing, the bottom of a wide hole is covered with sand. The depth of the hole is different for each variety. If you picked up low-growing varieties, it is enough 12 cm, for tall ones the pit depth should be of the order of 20 cm. Sand for drainage is chosen only coarse-grained.

Before planting fritillaria we disinfect the bulbs. For these purposes, a solution of potassium permanganate is suitable, after which we must powder everything with pounded coal. We put the bulbs only sideways, then we pour the sand. Then moisture will not accumulate between the scales and the processes of decay do not start.

If after the purchase of planting fretillaria is not possible and you need to store bulbs, caring for them is to prevent drying out. We place the blanks in moist peat or sphagnum moss , then we put it in the refrigerator on the lower shelf. The time when it is necessary to plant a free mold, falls in September-October. If you do not have time to do the work in these terms, then you can land later. Only necessarily cover the places of planting with leaves and mulch .

Fritillaria: reproduction

The flower propagates vegetatively or by seeds. The seed method is great for all types and you only need two plants that are in the flowering period. Immediately after pollination the seed capsule will begin to form. As it ripens, it will occupy a vertical position. After its walls dry, you can collect seeds.

Sowing is necessary immediately after harvesting. The soil must be prepared, well enriched with organic matter. The fact that the seedlings in it will be a couple of years, until they get stronger. To plant the seeds of the flower, the friillaries make grooves about 10 cm wide and 1 cm deep. After sowing, all mulch peat with a layer of 2 cm. Next year, the first shoots will appear in the spring.

When one mother bulb forms several substitutes, one can proceed to vegetative reproduction. When digging up the children are relatively easy to separate and problems with subsequent planting does not arise. It should be borne in mind that often one or two bulbs remain in the ground and a year later new shoots appear there. So it is not recommended to change varieties in one place every year.

Fritillaria: care

Now let us dwell directly on the rules of planting and caring for fritillaria.

  1. Watering is necessary for all bulbs. Do not forget after flowering to water a couple of times a month onions so that they do not dry out.
  2. Feeding in many ways reminds care of lilies. Twice a season we add dry fertilizers to the soil. The first time at the end of April, according to the instructions, nitrofosc and Agricola are brought. The second time fed in bloom with superphosphates or potassium sulfate.
  3. After the flower of fritillaria has faded and lost its ornamentality, the entire above-ground part is cut off.
  4. The plant is quite resistant to pests, so enough preventive measures. To prevent the appearance of such problems, periodically change the landing sites, it is advisable to choose those areas where previously other types of plants were grown, not bulbous.
