Chronic otitis media

In the cold season, inflammatory diseases of the ENT organs are very common. One of them is chronic otitis media, which usually worsens in winter and when there are epidemics of viral infections. If you do not deal with the treatment of pathology, serious complications, fraught with partial or total loss of hearing, can develop.

Symptoms of chronic otitis media

The disease in question occurs when the acute form is not treated correctly or if it is absent. Otitis is characterized by the gradual destruction (perforation) of the tympanic membrane, which leads to a worsening of the acuity of hearing. Because of the slow progression of the disease, patients get used to secretions from the ear and practically do not notice the pathology, since it has no other clinical manifestations. The reference to the otolaryngologist occurs already at a late stage, when the hearing almost completely disappears.

Treatment of chronic otitis media of the middle ear

Before the beginning of therapy, the discharge from the diseased shell is examined, the pathogen of inflammation and its sensitivity to antibiotic drugs are identified.

Chronic suppurative otitis media can be treated with such local means:

In severe forms, hormonal solutions of hydrocortisone or dexamethasone are prescribed to quickly stop the inflammatory process.

It is worth noting that chronic otitis often combines with other diseases of the ENT organs, especially the nasal sinuses - sinusitis, sinusitis, frontitis , curvature of the septum. In the presence of the listed diseases it is necessary to conduct parallel therapy of the considered pathology and accompanying ailments to avoid repeated mutual infection.

In rare cases, surgical intervention is required. The operation is appointed if the conservative drug treatment or rapid progression of the disease (hearing loss). Modern doctors use such surgical approaches:

Correctly performed operation allows to completely preserve the structure of the middle ear, to avoid characteristic damages of the tympanic membrane and subsequent scarring of the tissue, deformation of the auditory canal and other complications.
