In the center of the city of Fremantle is a multi-cultural institution, working in several directions. Here organize exhibitions, read music lectures and conduct art lessons. This institution is called the Fremantle Arts Center.

This impressive historical building, built in the style of colonial Gothic. Its territory covers 2.5 hectares. At one time it was the largest public institution in the whole state. It was built by prisoners near the bay in the nineteenth century between 1861 and 1868. The direct purpose of this structure was - the content of mentally unhealthy people, and a little later they began to bring especially violent criminals.
Psychiatric clinic worked until the beginning of XX century. But after two suspicious deaths, the population of the city was pretty much outraged, and then the government decided to conduct a thorough check of the institution. The verdict was unhappy: to demolish the building, because it did not match the purpose of use. In 1901 - 1905 patients hospital transferred to other different hospitals, but the building itself did not touch.
Financing for repairs was sought for quite some time and it was only in 1970 that the matter was resolved. Two years later, two institutions were located here: the Maritime Museum, which was later moved to the Victoria Quay, and the Fremantle House of Art, which still operates.
