How to teach a child to read in English?

In modern society, knowledge of foreign languages is not something supernatural. Practically in all educational institutions children begin to learn English already from the second class. In some schools, approximately from the fifth grade, another foreign language is joined to English, for example, Spanish or French.

Further knowledge of foreign languages will help the student enter a prestigious institution and find a good, highly paid job. In addition, an elementary understanding of the language is very important during personal or business trips abroad.

Learning English begins with reading the simplest texts. If a child can read well in a foreign language, other skills - speech, listening and writing - are developing rapidly. In this article, we will tell you how to quickly and correctly teach a child to read English at home, so that at school he immediately became one of the best students.

How to gradually teach a child to read in English?

The most important thing in teaching reading in any language is patience. Do not push the child and go to the next step only when the previous one is fully mastered.

The sample training scheme consists of the following stages:

  1. To teach a child to read in English from scratch, it is necessary, first of all, to introduce him to the letters of the English alphabet. To do this, buy a large-format alphabet with bright pictures, special cards or wooden cubes with the image of letters, which are usually very popular with young children. First, explain to the baby how each letter is called, and then, gradually, teach him the sounds that these letters convey.
  2. Since there are a lot of words in English that are not read the way they are written, they need to be postponed for later. Do not use special texts to teach children language, they must meet at least a few difficult to read moments. Write on the piece of paper the simplest monosyllables, such as "pot", "dog", "spot" and so on, and start with them. With this method of learning, the child at first will simply fold letters into words, which is quite natural for him, because he learned his native language.
  3. Finally, after successfully mastering the previous stages, you can also go on to read the simplest texts that use words with non-standard pronunciation. In parallel, it is necessary to learn the grammar of the English language, so that the child understands why each word is pronounced in this way. It will be very useful to listen to audio recordings on which the text is read by native speakers.
