Monasteries of Suzdal

Suzdal, the oldest city-reserve, is famous due to a huge number of historical and architectural monuments. Monasteries and temples of Suzdal attract thousands of tourists and pilgrims from all over Russia. We will tell about the holy monasteries - the monasteries of Suzdal.

Pokrovsky Convent in Suzdal

Pokrovsky women's monastery stretched out on the right bank of the Kamenka River in the northern part of the city. It was founded in 1364 with the aim of keeping women of aristocratic families trimmed into nuns, most often forcibly (for example, Vasily III's wife Solomoniya Saburova, Ivan IV's wife Anna Vasilchikova and others). The monastic complex, on whose territory the magnificent three-domed Cathedral of the Intercession towers, the Holy Gates with the Gate Church, the Tent Tower and the Refectory Chamber, is surrounded by a stone fence with towers.

Vasilyevsky Monastery in Suzdal

Vasilievsky Monastery is located in the eastern part of Suzdal on the road that leads to the village of Kideksha. The complex, built for defensive purposes in the XIII century, gradually turned into a monastery monastery. The main temple of the complex - the cathedral of Basil the Great - was built in 1662 -1669 in the classical style without any decor elements. Other buildings, such as the Sretenskaya church, the Holy Gates, a stone fence with towers, also look modest.

The Alexander Monastery

According to legend, the Alexander Convent in Suzdal was founded in 1240 by Alexander Nevsky. Many buildings were destroyed as a result of a fire. In 1695, they built an elegant Ascension church with an unusual octagonal tent bell tower. In the XVIII century the complex is enclosed by a brick wall, the Holy Gates are built with an arch and a turret.

Rizopolozhensky monastery in Suzdal

From the existing monasteries of Suzdal, this monastery is the oldest in the city. The monastery was founded in 1207 by the efforts of the Suzdal bishop John. The first facilities of the complex were wooden, but they did not survive. The oldest building of the complex, the 16th-century Risposal Cathedral, is the first stone structure. There are also elegant two-sash Holy Gate, built in 1688, the three-tiered Reverend bell tower and the remains of the Sretensky refectory church.

Monastery of Saint Euthymius

Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery in Suzdal was founded in 1350 originally as an outpost. The first buildings of the complex were made of wood. In the XVII century the monastery is enclosed by powerful walls with loopholes and towers. On the territory of the complex are the majestic Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral, the elegant Belfry, the Assumption Refectory Church, the Archimandrite Corps, the St. Nicholas Church and even the Prison Castle. Now the architectural complex of the monastery is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
