History of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris
The history of the famous music hall Moulin Rouge in France began in 1889. Its founder is Joseph Aller, owner of the Paris-Olimpia Concert Hall. The name of the cabaret is associated with the location - it is located near the foot of Montmartre, where an old red mill was preserved, next to the famous quarter of the Red Lanterns. The proximity of this scandalous place and determined the color and, in fact, the direction.
Since there were a lot of great restaurants nearby, the owner made a bet on incendiary dances and shows. It was here that the cancan first appeared in its modern variation. He was danced by courteous courtesans in order to seduce men and attract customers. The dances became more and more frank and even erotic, and eventually caused public reprimand, having formed an appropriate reputation for the institution.
A little later, when the music halls began to gain momentum in Europe, courtesans disappeared from the Moulin Rouge and it became quite a decent and legal night institution. The character of the dances also changed: to the usual movements of the cancan, bold acrobatic stunts were added, causing admiring sighs. The dance was still unchained, but ceased to be provocative and received the status of art.
The performers of dances have also changed. Vulgar courtesans were replaced by unsuccessful ballerinas with professional training, and the technique of performance accordingly grew. In the following years, Mullen Rouge was honored by Ella Fitzgerald, Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Frank Sinatra, Lisa Minelli and many others. In his paintings and works he was glorified by many famous artists of the twentieth century.
