Museum of Art and Culture "Patak"


Located in the suburbs of the New Zealand capital of Wellington, the town of Porirua, the Museum of Art and Culture "Patak" entices not only tourists but also local residents. After all, this is truly a unique place, which contains the most interesting expositions demonstrating the art of the Maori tribe, the aboriginal islands of the Pacific Ocean, as well as representatives of other countries.

In particular, the museum has an art gallery, a library, a unique musical exposition, a Japanese garden and a cafe - which creates an inimitable museum complex, which is a kind of cultural oasis not only of Porirua, but of the whole of New Zealand.

History of creation

The museum was established in 1997 under the auspices of several organizations, among them the Business Association of the Municipality of Porirua, the Council for Culture and Art of the Mana Community. Originally, this museum was located in Takapuwahiya, where the Museum of the City of Porirua once acted.

And in 1998 the Museum moved to a new address, to the premises where all the conditions for creating new expositions and spacious galleries were created. Also, the organizers of the museum arranged a courtyard, a library, a conference room, a Japanese garden.

What can you see in the halls of the Museum?

The cultural institution is in great demand among tourists and local residents. Every year it is visited by more than 150 thousand people. Each hall of the museum, its department in its own way is interesting and unique.

For example, the Library has collected more than 140,000 books of various subjects. And in 2000 a children's department was opened here.

The Art Gallery presents a lot of interesting works of artists, both from New Zealand and other Pacific islands.

The Melody Farm will delight fans of music. After all, this is a real museum of music - not only ethnic, Pacific, but also classical. The department presents various works and directions for more than 80-year period - from the 80s of the 19th century to the 60th years of the 20th century.

To equip the Japanese garden, experts from the Land of the Rising Sun were invited - they created an imitation of an ideal combination of water and mountains. For this they used special gravel, rock fragments.

Address and opening hours

The Museum of Art and Culture "Pataka" is located in the town of Porirua at the crossroads of Noria and Parumoana streets. From Wellington, you can get there by commuter bus, train or taxi.

The entrance to the museum is free. A cultural institution operates daily: from Monday to Saturday inclusive, visitors are expected from 10:00 to 17:00, and on Sunday from 11:00 to 16:30.
