Anglican Cathedral of St. Andrew

The magnificent Anglican Cathedral of St. Andrew is located in the center of Sydney near the City Hall and is a perfect example of a Gothic revival style. It is the oldest temple in Australia, included in the register of national architectural monuments under state protection. Its appearance completely replicates the architectural style of medieval England, conveying the color of the past centuries.

Events that take place in the cathedral

In the cathedral every day, there are services. On Sundays, and also several times a week during school holidays, Easter and Christmas, you can listen to the church choir here. Also, several Bible study groups function in the church and prayer meetings are held. If one of your loved ones or friends gets sick, you can take part in a group prayer for healing.

There are two children's and one adult choir in the church, and there is a bell ring school. The cathedral is famous for its ancient organ, you will be able to listen to it, if you come here for mass or a concert. This instrument is distinguished for its unrivaled sound by combining two organs, making it the largest in Australia.

External appearance of the building

The cathedral is a beautiful example of perpendicular Gothic. The presence of a large number of vertical lines allowed to create a building with surprisingly harmonious proportions.

The exterior decoration looks quite luxurious: at the first glance at the temple you immediately notice the exquisite turrets, high spiers and magnificent stucco. The interior of the cathedral is designed in a more strict style. The walls are made of stone of soft colors and almost devoid of decor elements. The only decoration is colorful stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and his apprent Andrew.

Although the building itself is small enough, it makes a majestic impression due to the presence of arcades, a roof decorated with a mosaic of blue and bright red, and carved stone bands wrapped around the naves. On them the names of prominent clergymen who stood at the origins of Christianity in Australia were knocked out. The floor in the altar looks very beautiful due to the polished marble slabs with deep embossing. The rest of the building is paved with red and black tiles.

The altarpiece is carved from translucent alabaster by the English sculptor Thomas Erp and consists of three panels: the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Resurrection and the Ascension. On both sides they are framed by the figures of the prophets Elijah and Moses. The choirs are made of dark oak and decorated with foliage.

On the bell tower of the temple there are 12 bells, the largest of which weighs 3 tons.
