Powerhouse Museum


The Powerhouse Museum is one of Sydney 's oldest cultural and educational centers and the main branch of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences. It introduces visitors to devices and machines that were invented several centuries ago, as well as with modern innovations.

History of the museum

The history of the Powerhouse Museum dates back to 1878. The first collection was created from exhibits that were shown at various Australian exhibitions. At first the museum was located in the exhibition center Garden Palace, which was destroyed by a fire in 1882. After that the Powerhouse Museum was located in different buildings. The museum has acquired the permanent address of 500 Harris St only in 1982. In February 2015, it became known that the state government decided to transfer it to the Parramatta district.
