Poveglia Island

It turns out, and in a romantic Venice there was a place of mysticism and horror. Poveglia Island is a mysterious island, symbolizing death and devastation. Povegliyu even called the Venetian island of the dead.

History of the island of Poveglia

It all started during the Roman Empire - it was this island that brought all the sick with the plague, and here they were in terrible agony waiting for death. Thus, it was planned to isolate the hopelessly sick and prevent the spread of a terrible disease. Unfortunately, such measures did not help much - the disease was stronger.

According to historical data, during the Black Plague, more than 160 thousand people died here. They did not have time to bury, so they simply burned them on big bonfires. Because of this, the island's land for the most part consists of the ashes of human bodies.

Already in the 20 th century on the island opened the Psychiatric Hospital for the mentally handicapped. All patients, getting here, as one complained of terrible headaches, and at night they were tormented by nightmares in the image of the ghosts of martyrs who died, moaning and screaming.

It was said that the head physician of the hospital himself was not completely healthy either, that he did monstrous experiments on his patients, tested unproven drugs, and carried out lobotomy in the cellars under the walls of the hospital with a hammer, drills and chisels. Honestly - from all this information just goose bumps!

In the late 70's the island was completely abandoned, no one lives here. Above the island still stands the bell tower, which serves as a reference point for local fishermen. By the way, they carefully bypass the cursed island, so that instead of catching fish, it's worse than for example human bones.

Hell Gate

This and many other unflattering names people gave and give to the island of Poveglia in Italy. For example - the refuge of lost souls, dead happiness, the damned land.

Today the island is a dull cluster of dilapidated buildings, dilapidated buildings, which are gradually concealed by nature, taking them into oblivion together with all the mysterious stories. And all this - just a couple of miles from the magnificent palaces of the Grand Canal.

Tourism on Povglia

For tourists, the Venetian Poveglia is closed, but despite this, they seem to attract here something mysterious and unknown. And the first thing you can see when approaching the island is the high bell tower. It is the oldest building, not counting the ruins of an ancient church dated to the 12th century. The belfry in the 18th century turned into a lighthouse, but today it has become just a landmark. It was from her, according to legend, that the mad doctor dropped himself.

The next object is an octagonal structure, which served as a defensive purpose in the 14th century. Having rounded it, you will get to the strait above which the main building of the psychiatric hospital rises. It almost completely covered with greens and disappeared from the eyes. But if you know where to look for it, you will definitely see it.

Twenty years ago, builders erected scaffolds along its perimeter to prevent its complete destruction, which gives the structure an even more expressive and gloomy appearance.

If you dare to go inside the former clinic, prepare to see dull hospital walls, flaky paint, some sort of made-up bunk beds, broken hospital furniture. The spectacle, let's say at once, is not predisposing to romance.

Residents of Italy do their best to refute the bad reputation of Povegliya, calling the hospital building a sanatorium for the elderly. But in this case, why are there leftovers of medical equipment and hospital beds, and there are even inscriptions on the walls of window grilles indicating that the psychiatric hospital was here?
