Thanks to this universal apparel, men did not experience discomfort during movements, the skirt quickly dried up after the rain, crossing the swampy terrain. But in the early 1720s a large kilt turned into a small one, having lost its cloak. Such a transformation he owed to Thomas Rolinson, a Lancashire businessman. The enterprising Scot offered his employees to cut off the cloak from the skirt so that it would not stop them from processing the wood. The skirt in the Scottish cage survived a lot. From 1746 to 1782, she was banned - so the English punished the Scots for the riot of the Jacobites. And only in 1822, with the filing of King George IV, the kilt again began to play the role of a symbol of Scottish self-identification.
