20 places in Scotland, which came off the pages of books-fantasy

Great news for fans of the "Game of Thrones", who dreamed of getting to Västerås - in Scotland there is Wester-Ross.

1. Stratherd Peninsula, Skye Island (Strathaird peninsula, Isle of Skye)

This beautiful, barely populated peninsula in the south of the island of Skye is simply mesmerizing. On one of its hills are the ruins of the fortress of the Iron Age Dun Ringill. Most of the peninsula now belongs to the charitable organization "John Muir Trust".

2. Cave Smu Cave (Smoo Cave)

No, this is not a series of screenshots from a video game, it's a real cave Smu Cave, in which several sea caves are connected. Located near the village of Darnes, in a mountainous area.

3. Knapps Loch, Kilmakolm, Inverclyde (Knapps Loch, Kilmacolm, Inverclyde)

Knapps Loch is a small but incredibly picturesque lake near the village of Kilmakolm, which was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age and is located 26 km west of Glasgow.

6. Dunnottar Castle, Aberdeenshire (Dunottar Castle, Aberdeenshire)

This fortress in the style of the "Games of Thrones" is called Dannottar - from the Scottish Gaelic Dùn Fhoithear, which means "fortress on the slope of the slope". It is believed that this place was inhabited at the time of the Picts (5000 BC before the 700's AD).

7. Pyramid of Bouachailles Etive Moor, Highland (Buachaille Etive Mòr, Highland)

"Great Shepherd Etive" towers over the horizon for many kilometers and it is easy to see, driving along the scenic A82 road. The name refers to the whole mountain range, and not to a separate mountain. The most recognizable part of it (in the photo) is Stob Dearg.

8. Handa Island, Sutherland (Handa Island, Sutherland)

The sandy cliffs surrounding this magnificent, amazing west-coast island of wildlife, come alive every summer when approximately 100,000 seabirds gather here to breed, including over 250 pairs of petrels.

9. Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe Lake (Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe)

Castle Kilchurn - destroyed fortress of the 15th century, which is located in the north-eastern part of the lake. Loch Ave in Argyll. It was the hereditary home of the Clan Campbells, but was abandoned because of heavy damage by lightning in 1760.

10. Standing stones Callanish, the island of Lewis (Callanish Standing Stones, Isle of Lewis)

These slightly creepy standing stones on the island of Lewes are arranged in the shape of a cross. According to legend, early in the morning at the height of summer the creature, known as "Shining", strolls around the stones to the center of the circle.

This magical city on the island of Skye is located near the port, decorating the bay with bright buildings. The name "Portree" means "Port of the King" (Port-an-Rìgh).

12. Lake Loch Shildeg, Vester Ross (Loch Shieldaig, Wester Ross)

In the center of this mountain lake is the island of Shildeg, which is covered with perennial pines, but despite this, there are practically no plants on the surrounding hills and mountains. It is believed that they were still covered with plants in Victorian times.

This small island in the Inner Hebrides is known for its calm beauty. In the Early Middle Ages, this area was an important part of the ancient Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata and was the center of spiritual education for about four centuries.

The St. Monance Pier is one of several fishing villages that enter East Foyer in the Fife region. It is home to an incredible windmill, but its most interesting feature is an unusual mole with zigzag turns that stretches out into the Outer Forth Estuary.

Sgurr Tearlaih is one of several peaks that form the Black Cuillin ridge on the island of Skye. It's so hard to climb up on it, that it's even called "The Inaccessible Peak".

A salibost and a similar nearby beach Laskentair are often described as the best beaches in Scotland thanks to their incredibly white sands contrasting with a seemingly tropical (but cold) turquoise sea.

20. Eilean Donan Castle, Kyle of Lochalsh (Eilean Donan Castle, Kyle of Lochalsh)

Eilen-Donan can be called one of the most iconic castles in Scotland. It is located on a narrow, tidal island, where three large sea lakes are united: Duich, Long, and Alsh.
