Yurgdorsbrun

Almost in the very center of Stockholm is the bridge Jurgordsbrun, which is considered the most beautiful in the Swedish capital. Now it is one of the main metropolitan attractions , and 120 years ago served as a liaison between mainland Sweden and the island of Djurgården.

History of construction of Jurgdorsbrun

The island of Djurgården has long been a favorite hunting place for members of the royal family. To bridge it to the mainland, bridges of different sizes were built on the Yurgdorsbrunviken River more than once. According to historical data, "New Bridge" (1661), Fredrikshovsbron (1730) and Djurgardsflottbro (1801) were erected in this part of Stockholm before Jurgdarsbrun. The last wooden bridge would be replaced by a three-span iron structure, which was demolished in 1895.

The bridge was built in 1897, when it became known that the World Exhibition of Arts Culture will be organized on the island of Djurgården. In 1977, it was reconstructed, as a result of which three spans were raised with a pontoon crane.

Uniqueness of Jurgdorsbrun

The creation of this cast-iron bridge was worked by engineer Carl Fraenelle and architect Eric Josephson. They managed to build a three-span structure with a length of 58 m and a width of 18 m from the stone. Thanks to the reinforced construction, Yurgdorsbrun is able to withstand even trams.

From the very first moment of the official opening, this stone arched bridge has amazed all spectators with its architectural splendor. It stands on four columns of solid granite. Each column of Jurgardsbrun is decorated with statues depicting the gods of Scandinavian mythology:

In addition to them, images of St. Eric, who is considered to be the patron saint of Stockholm, as well as reliefs of sea monsters were painted on the bridge details. Along all Yurgordsbrun there are elegant lampposts, in the light of which people and visitors of the capital like to walk.

In addition to hiking, you can go rollerblading, bicycle or boat rental. After a walk along the Yurgardensbrunn, tourists go to the Museum of Fairytales , the Vasa Ship Museum , the Northern Museum, the Aquarium or other famous Stockholm sights.
