Palace of Wrangel

In the southwestern part of Stockholm , on the banks of Riddarfjörden, the Wrangel Palace is located, a structure that was used as the residence of the Swedish king in 1697-1754. Nowadays, the Royal Palace is 500 meters to the west, and in this ancient building is located the Court of Appeal of Sweden.

History of the construction of the palace of Wrangel

Despite the fact that the official opening of this castle took place in 1802, some of its original buildings are much older. The most ancient building of the Wrangel Palace in Stockholm is the powerful medieval South Tower. It was built on the orders of King Gustav Vaz in the 1530s as a fortification. Only 100 years later the palace was built around the South Tower.

The author of the redesign and expansion of the castle is Nicodemus Ticin, who was hired by Count Carl-Gustav Wrangel. After the fire took place in the royal palace in 1697, the monarch's residence was moved to the Wrangel Palace in Stockholm. Here it remained until 1754.

Since 1756, the Civil and Criminal Court of Appeal of Sweden has been located in Wrangel Castle.

Use of the Wrangel Palace

In those days, when the castle played the role of the monarch's residence, music was constantly sounded here, and parties and masquerades were arranged. It was in the palace of Wrangel in Stockholm that the coronation of King Charles XII took place. Especially for this, an impromptu room was created right in the courtyard of the castle.

Unfortunately, all these decorative elements were destroyed by fire, and after numerous restorations the Wrangel Palace in Stockholm lost its former luxury. For all the time of its existence this building has been rebuilt many times, its inhabitants and direct appointment changed. Despite the convenient location and large area, no one stayed here for long.

Currently, the central entrance to the castle is moved to the opposite side. The fact that there is a government institution here can be understood by the flag that develops on its roof. Due to permanent restoration and major repairs it is difficult to know the age of the structure. About him you can judge only by the metal braces in the walls of the building, which were used in the Middle Ages.
