The Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera in Stockholm is a theater in the Swedish capital, the main opera and ballet stage of the country, as well as Sweden 's largest theater and the very first in which the Swedish, not the invited troupe, began to perform.

A bit of history

The theater was organized by the decree of King Gustav III, the very one whose circumstances of death formed the basis of Verdi's opera "The Masquerade Ball." The first performance given by the Swedish troupe was the opera "Thetis and Peleus", the main parts of which were performed by Carl Stenborg and Elizabeth Olin. This happened on January 18, 1773, but the theater did not yet have its own buildings.

Its construction began only in 1775, and was completed in 1782. The official opening of the theater took place on January 18, 1872. The building lasted about 100 years - until 1892. Then it was demolished, and construction of a new one, which lasted 7 years, was started. The theater opened on September 19, 1898, during the reign of King Oscar II.

Royal opera today

It was originally called the "royal theater", but later, to distinguish it from the Royal Dramatic Theater, established a few years later, the opera theater was simply called "Opera". It is this name that is written above the central arch of the facade of the building.

The building itself was built in neoclassical style according to the project of the architect Axel Johan Anderberg. It is somewhat smaller than the building of the old theater, but due to the massive architecture solutions it seems even larger than it actually is. The facade is decorated with arches and a two-story colonnade.

The foyer of the theater is lavishly decorated with gold. The main staircase is made of marble. The auditorium is designed for 1200 seats. And in it, and in the foyer are very beautiful chandeliers. The style of decoration of these rooms can be called neo-baroque.
