The Til Gallery


On the territory of Stockholm is concentrated a huge number of architectural and cultural attractions , widely advertised by travel companies. But there are also little-known objects, undeservedly deprived of the attention of tourists. One of them is the Til Gallery, named after its creator, the banker Ernest Till.

History of creation

The founder of the gallery was a well-known capital banker, who knows a lot about culture and art. His first painting patron bought in 1896. It was "The Morning Atmosphere by the Sea" by artist Bruno Liljefors. By 1907, Ernest Til collected a large collection of art paintings, so he decided to build a large house with a separate gallery. In the future, because of problems in business, he sold the entire collection of values ​​to the state, to which the Til gallery was transferred in 1924.

The official opening of the Art Museum took place in 1926. Ernest Til himself died 20 years after this event.

Expositions of the Tila Gallery

To the construction of this white villa Ernest Til attracted the architect Ferdinand Beaver, who previously designed the palace Oakhill, the palace of Prince Eugene and other mansions on the island of Djurgården. It was he who managed to create a villa in which the elements of the traditional Swedish manor and the eastern temple are combined. When the building of the Til Gallery in Stockholm was put into operation, it struck everyone with its elegance and picturesque surrounding scenery.

When creating the collection, Ernest Til bought up the works of contemporary artists, many of whom were also his friends. Thanks to this in the Til Gallery you can admire canvases, the creation of which worked:

Edward Munch's paintings are exhibited in a separate room of the Til Gallery, and the rest of the paintings are in two halls with glass ceilings and natural illumination.

In addition to the exhibition of paintings, you can admire the wooden figures of Axel Peterson, the sculptures of Auguste Rodin and Christian Erickson. It is under the sculpture "Shadow", released from the hand of Auguste Rodin, is stored a funeral urn with the ashes of Ernest Til. And in the Til Gallery, in a room called the "heart" of the villa, a unique object is exposed - the death mask of the great philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

The creator of the museum can be called a person with a well-developed sense of beauty. In addition to collecting paintings, he wrote memoirs, translated Nietzsche's works into Swedish, composed poems. All these documents are kept in the Til Gallery in Stockholm . To get acquainted with all the museum's exhibits, tourists usually spend 2-2.5 hours.

How to get to the Til Gallery?

To get acquainted with the valuable canvases of this art museum, you need to go to the south-east of the Swedish capital on the coast of the Salt Lake Bay. The Til Gallery is located about 6 km from the center of Stockholm on the island of Djurgården. It can be reached by road Djurgardsbrunnsvagen by taxi or a rented car .

From public transport there are buses. First you need to take the metro to T-Centralen station, and then transfer to bus route No.69. The Til Gallery is a minute's walk from the Thielska galleriet.
