Cueva de los Guacarós


Cueva de los Guacaros (also pronounced "Cueva de los Guajaros") is the National Park in Colombia , the oldest of all nature conservation areas of the country (it was established in 1960). It is part of the biosphere reserve of the Andean Belt, established in 1979. The area of ​​the park is almost 91 square meters. km. It is located in the west of the Cordillera-Oriental mountain system.

Geography of the park

The main water flow of Cueva de los Guácháros is the river Sáuza. It was thanks to her that such a large number of caves and underground passages appeared on the territory of the park . In addition to the South, several of its tributaries flow through the park, some form very cute waterfalls .

A bridge is laid across the river, on which there is an observation deck; except for it, in the park there are other areas, from which it is convenient to observe its inhabitants.

Flora and fauna of the reserve

From the Spanish name of the National Park is translated as "Guaharo Cave". Guaharo is a large (up to 45 cm in length) bird, leading a nocturnal life. Today it is almost threatened with extinction, as the population previously hunted for these birds because of their fatty and tasty meat. Currently, many guaharo nests (and they nest in caves) are under protection in the territory of national parks.

But guaharo - not the only feathered inhabitants of the park Cueva de los Guacharos: there are also 295 species of birds. The park is also home to 62 species of mammals: here you can see a spectacle bear, several species of monkeys, tapir, bakers.

How to visit the park?

From Bogotá, 3 times a week, direct flights to Pitalito fly from where it is almost within easy reach of Cueva de los Guacaros. The flight takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. You can fly and with a transfer, but in this case, the duration of travel will grow at times (not less than 8 hours).

From Pitalito to the park can be reached in just over an hour. Cueva de los Guacaros is open from 6:00 to 17:00 daily (except on public holidays in Colombia ).
