Lagoon-Edionda


The Altiplano high plateau in the Bolivian department of Potosi is decorated with a salt lake called the Laguna Hedionda. The reservoir is located at an altitude of 4121 m above sea level, and its area is 3 square meters. km. The shoreline of the Lagoon-Ediond stretches for 9 km, while the depth of the lake is relatively small and only in some places is about 1 meter.

"Smelly Lake"

The water in the source is characterized by a high content of salts, which, according to different versions, can reach from 66 to 80%. In addition, it is enriched in sulfur, why in the Lagoon-Edionda area there is a fetid smell of hydrogen sulphide. That is why the indigenous population often calls the Lagoon-Edionda "stinking lake". The banks of the reservoir are saline, and in some places - swamped.

Inhabitants of the reservoir

It seems that life is impossible in such extreme conditions, but this is far from being the case. In the lake there is a large number of plankton and other microorganisms serving as food for numerous species of birds. Walking around the Edgunda Lagoon, you can see pink and white flamingos, a vanishing species of James flamingo (until recently it was considered extinct, but it was here that nesting of these birds was discovered), as well as countless ducks, waders, geese. The animal world of the lake is meager and is represented by alpacas, llamas and vicuñas.
