The botanico garden of Jose Celestino Mutis


Botanico Botanico José Celestino Mutis is one of Bogota's most famous landmarks and the largest of all the parks of the Colombian capital.

A bit of history

The park bears the name of Jose Mutis, the Spanish botanist and naturalist, the "patriarch of botanists", in honor of whom the notion of mutation is named. The park was founded in 1781, when Colombia was a Spanish colony.

The architectural project was executed by the Spaniard Juan de Villanueva, who in 1786 took the post of chief Madrid architect, and from 1789 began to work at the court of the monarch. Botanist and pharmacist Kasimiro Gomez de Ortega was responsible for the "vegetable" project. In the park there is a scientific library, in which are stored some notes and scientific works of Mutis.

Vegetation of the park

More than 3,000 trees and shrubs grow on 8 hectares of land, and in total there are about 19,000 plants. 850 species from the growing Botanico Botanico José Celestino Mutis are local, Colombian. There is also a rose garden, where roses of 73 species are grown, as well as a greenhouse with medicinal plants. The symbol of the park is Clematis Muisia, also named after Mutis.
