Fort Alakran

Arica is the northernmost city in Chile , with a rich history and many attractions. One of the most interesting places is Fort Alakran, an ancient Spanish fortress on the peninsula of the same name.

History of Fort Alakran

On the European geographical maps of the early 17th century. Arica is mentioned as the most famous southern city. The reason for this unexpected glory was the discovery of silver deposits, which turned out to be the richest in the New World. The news aroused a natural interest among fans of easy money - pirates of the Pacific. The raids of sea robbers on the port of Arica, which became the center of export of silver, and the city itself became frequent. This circumstance prompted the Spanish administration to decide on the erection of the fort on the high cliff of the peninsula Alakran (from the Spanish "alakran" - the scorpion). Construction was conducted during the 17-18 centuries. The military garrison, located in the fort, defended the city and the royal treasure, full of silver and precious stones. Over time, pirate raids from the sea stopped.
