San Antonio Hill

The hill of San Antonio (Spanish version of Cerro San Antonio), also called the English Hill, is one of the most famous hills surrounding the small Uruguayan city of Piriapolis .

What is the famous hill?

Among the inhabitants of the town it is known as a place where, at an altitude of 70 m, one of the most famous landmarks of the region is located - the iconostas of the Virgin Mary, placed on a special pedestal. The face of the Mother of God is facing the sea, as if protecting sailors, fishermen and travelers. Under the image is a stone, from which the legend began the construction of the city of Piriapolis.

A little higher is the small temple of San Antonio with a modest decoration. Here is exhibited the image of a saint, brought from Milan and is a place of pilgrimage for many Uruguayans. Guests can relax in the hotel located right next to the church with a swimming pool. Local craftsmen constantly offer skilled craftsmen and souvenirs in ethnic style to the hill.

From the hill a wonderful panorama of the neighborhood opens: the center of Piriápolis, the hills of Cerro del Toro and the Sugar Loaf and other nearby hills. Particularly beautiful views enchant visitors to the city at sunset.

How to get there?

If desired, tourists can walk to the hill and on its slopes on foot, but there is also an access road for cars here. At the top of you quickly delivered a special cable car. To the hill is the convenient motorway Ascenso al Cerro San Antonio.
