Hypothiazide is a diuretic which, in addition, has an antihypertensive effect at a high blood pressure level. The principle of therapeutic action of tablets is associated with the inhibitory effect of hydrochlorothiazide on the functioning of the epithelium of the renal tubules. This is manifested, mainly, in reducing the reverse absorption of sodium, chlorine (as well as a small amount of potassium and bicarbonates) and corresponding doses of water. There is also a reduction in the excretion of uric acid and calcium ions and an increase in the excretion of magnesium ions. Medication Hypothiazide has an effect in various malfunctions of the acid-base balance of the body - both with acidification (acidosis) and with alkalization (alkalosis).
By reducing the volume of extracellular fluid achieved by removing sodium, chlorine and water ions, as well as expanding small arteries, hypotensive action is observed. In this case, the drug has no effect on normal blood pressure and does not cause the addictive effect. Hypotensive action of Hypothiazide increases with a salt-free diet. Also, the drug helps reduce intraocular pressure.
With prolonged use, the active substance of the drug helps delay the excretion of calcium ions by the kidneys, which can have a positive effect in the presence of kidney stones containing calcium salts.
Indications and contraindications for the use of Hypothiazide
Hypothiazid tablets are often prescribed for swelling and from high blood pressure. According to the instructions, the full list of indications of this drug is as follows:
1. Arterial hypertension I and II stages (as a means of monotherapy or in combination with other means of antihypertensive action).
2. Edema of various origin, associated with:
- nephrotic syndrome;
- chronic cardiac or renal insufficiency;
- premenstrual tension syndrome;
- cirrhosis of the liver;
- acute glomerulonephritis;
- reception of hormonal means, etc.
3. The need to prevent increased urine output (especially in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus).
4. The need to prevent stone formation in the urinary tract.
5. Glaucoma (in the complex treatment).
Contraindications to taking Hypothiazide:
- anuria;
- severe renal or hepatic insufficiency;
- diabetes mellitus in severe form;
- adrenocortical insufficiency;
- pregnancy (I trimester);
- refractory hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypercalcemia;
- hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Dosage of Hypothiazide
The dosage of the drug is selected depending on the form of the disease and the nature of its course. Tablets should be taken after meals.
In most cases, with increased pressure, the drug is taken at 25-50 mg per day. The dose of the medicine for edematous syndrome may be 25-100 mg, with Hypothiazide taken once a day or every other day. In the case of severe edema, the initial dose of the drug may be increased to 200 mg per day. In premenstrual syndrome, as a rule, take 25 mg tablets per day.
