Catatonic Stupor

No one is immune from diseases, both physical and mental. Catatonic stupor is a characteristic feature of catatonic syndrome, which is often replaced by excitement. It is a psychopathological syndrome. Its main clinical manifestations are motor disorders.

It is important to note that catatonic stupor is, first of all, a form of schizophrenia. But it can also occur in patients with symptomatic and organic psychoses. It usually develops at the initial stage of the disease with schizophrenia . The most severe form of stupor is lucoid. Develops in the chronic form of this mental illness.

It appears in adults, at the age of up to 50 years, it is possible that the child's disease is a stupor. At the moment there is no exact reason for the emergence of catatonia. There are only a lot of hypotheses.

One of the scientific assumptions is that this disease must be seen as a fear that has changed its reaction due to evolution. Stupor manifests itself not only when the mental health of the patient has filled the schizophrenia, and when the person is exposed to infections.

Types of disease

There are the following types of catatonic stupor:

  1. Stupor, accompanied by stupor. It is characterized by the maximum severity of inhibition of the patient's motor processes, as well as muscle hypertension. A person subject to this condition preserves the embryo's pose for a long time. Often observed in his symptoms, characteristic of an air cushion. These include: prolonged retention of the elevated head at a remote distance from the pillow. The distance from the patient's head to the pillow is 10-15 cm. This position he is able to maintain for several hours. During the onset of sleep, the symptom disappears. Remember that by pressing on the head, it can be lowered back. After a while, the person's head will take its original position.
  2. Negativistic catatonic stupor. It is characterized not only by the inhibition of motor processes, but also by the frequent contradiction of the sick person to any attempts to change the pose.
  3. Stupor, accompanied by wax flexibility. It is also called "cataleptic stupor". It is accompanied by a number of the following symptoms: congestion for a long time a person in a posture attached to him or accepted by him, albeit uncomfortable. Patients do not respond to loud sounds, to questions asked. Are able to respond only to a whisper. They come to their usual state in the conditions of the utter silence of the night. At this time, they can walk, tidy themselves up and answer questions.

Main symptoms

Catatonic stupor manifests itself in motor retardation, silence of the patient. All this is accompanied by muscle hypertension.

  1. Bound state sick with a stupor can save not only a few weeks, but months. At the same time, all kinds of their activities, including instinctive ones, are noticeably violated. Often, patients can remain immobile in the embryonic posture (eyes are closed, hands and feet are pressed to the body, the body is on its side).
  2. Refusal to eat, complete silence (mutism). In this case, the patients are fed artificially.
  3. Wax flexibility.
  4. Active and passive negativity.
  5. There is no dilated pupils in response to pain.

Catatonic stupor - treatment

Treatment should be made in a hospital, where the patient will initially be given small doses of 20% caffeine solution and 10% barbamyl solution. At the first signs of disinhibition of the patient, the introduction of these substances into the body ceases. In a psychiatric hospital, the patient is treated with an injection of frenolone into the blood. It is not excluded the reception of a psychostimulant sidocarb.

Do not think about how to get out of the stupor, if a person is not under the supervision of doctors, but, for example, at home. After all, any attempt at disinhibition can cause the patient to be excited, and this will create even greater additional difficulties.

Remember that a person with a mental illness should always be under the supervision of a doctor, otherwise he can do harm to himself and others.
