National day of Belgium

History of the holiday

In 1830, elections were held in Belgium for the National Congress. As a result of the work of the Congress, the Declaration on Belgian Independence and the Constitution of the country were proclaimed. A year later, in February, Belgium began to be considered a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral parliament, as a result of which the question of who would rule the country was widely discussed. National Congress King appointed the son of the French monarch Louis Philippe. This was followed by a huge wave of British protests, which led to the appointment of Leopold I. as the king's throne. On June 21, 1831, the newly crowned king swore an oath to the Belgian parliament on allegiance to the Belgian Constitution, on that day the country gained independence.
