Rhodes, Lindos

The island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea is a very popular tourist resort. In addition to its capital, there are other places worth visiting - for example, the charming town of Lindos. About what he is famous for and what are the features of rest in Lindos, you will now find out.

Lindos in Rhodes

This small town was built in the X century BC. Today, it is the only one on the island, preserved as a real residential city (except Rhodes itself). From the other two - Jalliaksos and Kameiros - there were only ruins left. In ancient times, Lindos was a major hub of maritime trade, mainly due to its natural features. Two closed bays perfectly protected the island from an attack from the sea, and Lindos at one time became famous as the center of navigation - it was here that for the first time in the world a code of maritime law was adopted.

Almost all the streets of the city are exclusively pedestrian, very narrow and winding. They are lined with white stone and black and white pebbles, which have become a kind of "visiting card" of the Greek Lindos. From transport in Lindos there are only donkeys - so prepare for long walks.

An interesting fact is that any new buildings within the city are prohibited, since it is unsafe - all local buildings are very ancient and any nearby building can disturb the delicate balance. Walking around the city, pay attention to the unusual architecture - the influence of Roman, Arab and Byzantine settlers. They can not help attracting the attention of travelers to small picturesque white houses, reminiscent of the cubes of refined sugar from a distance.

Hotels and beaches in Lindos

The famous city beach of Lindos is located in a cozy bay. A clean sandy beach, azure water of the Aegean Sea, stunning views of the Acropolis and lots of entertainment create wonderful opportunities for a comfortable beach holiday.

Just a few kilometers from the old town is a complex of hotels for every taste. Most Lindos hotels in Rhodes have 4-5 stars and are oriented to a quality and comfortable stay. All of them have a well-developed infrastructure and will make your holiday in Rhodes pleasant and memorable. One of the most popular hotels among our compatriots is Lindos Mare - a four-star hotel, located 2.5 km from the town and offering its guests all the necessary services, including international cuisine, entertainment for children, an outdoor swimming pool, water attractions and a sandy beach 100 m from cottages of the hotel.

Attractions in Lindos

Of course, the main local attraction is the Acropolis - a structure towering over the bay of St. Paul at 116 m. The Lindos Acropolis is considered the second largest after the Acropolis of Athens. Here, the ruins of the temple of Athena Lindia - the goddess revered by the ancient Greeks - have been preserved. It was built in the distant fourth century by the son of the king of Egypt, Danaos.

Near the entrance to the Acropolis you can see the famous petroglyph. This is a sculpture of the work of Pythonocracy, which is a bas-relief of a Greek warship.

In Lindos, there are monuments of Christian culture. In particular, it is the chapel of St. Paul, named the same as the bay. This holy apostle came to Lindos in time to convert his inhabitants to Christianity. Also worth visiting are the old St. John's Church, built at the dawn of the Byzantine Empire, and the Church of the Archangel Michael, located at the monastery of the same name (there you can see wonderful old frescoes and even visit the service).

In addition to architectural attractions, Lindos attracts tourists and its natural beauties. Many people come here to admire the so-called Valley of the Seven Sources. There, through a long cave, seven small but picturesque mountain streams flow, which then flock to the most beautiful lake. The legend says that anyone who has passed through these streams will be cleansed by body and spirit.
