The Monastery of Las Nazarenas

The Monastery of Las Nazarenas, or the Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas, is located in the historical center of the Peruvian capital of Lima . Even if you are not a religious person, you should definitely visit this legendary place for local people, because behind the walls of a modest religious complex there is a whole story full of incredible events. In this Catholic sanctuary, the Lord of Miracles is honored, Señor de los Milagros. He is considered the patron of Lima .

Architecture and interior

The monastery and the sanctuary were built in the 20s of the XVIII century. The gray structure with an intricate facade merges to such an extent with the general picture of the street, that at first it can not even be noticed. Both the monastery and the sanctuary have a very rich and interesting interior, designed in the style of rococo. Riot of colors, all kinds of icons and patterns - just marvel at how so much everything can look so harmonious, and even luxurious. Pay attention to the columns - each has its own design. Religious place is also decorated with sculptures of Jesus Christ and carved fences - they are everywhere.

The altars in the monastery of Las Nazarenas in Peru are amazing, and there are so many details that their eyes are scattered. In Europe, churches and monasteries are rarely bright, but here in Peru, this is common. Perhaps, that's why the locals go to similar places, as if on a holiday.

Interesting Facts

One evening in 1651, the artist, whom he now lived, would be called a vandal, painted a picture of Jesus Christ on the wall of one of the houses. A sort of street icon came out. A few days later the parishioners already appeared at the fresco. This is not surprising - the people of that time were very religious. After 4 years, a terrible earthquake happened, which killed many residents of the city and equalized hundreds of local buildings. The house on the wall of which was a fresco depicting Christ, also collapsed. However, the wall with the picture survived. Naturally, this fact shocked the population, and the people considered the icon of miraculous, judging that such coincidence simply does not happen in the world. Then around the icon built a small chapel.

In 1687, history repeated itself. Again terrible earthquakes, and again the icon is intact. Naturally, after such upheavals, the authorities tried and built a small church and a monastery.

The Purple Procession

The test of the icon with the earthquake in 1746 caused a new wave of religiousness in the country, a tradition appeared to march with the image of Christ. At first it was only in Lima, but gradually the tradition was adopted by other Peruvian cities. The procession, by the way, lasts for 24 hours and takes place annually in the middle of autumn. Participants of the event are always dressed in purple robes. By the way, this solemn religious procession is the largest in Latin America. The legendary fresco is behind the altar, in its unchanged place. On the holiday, her copy is taken out into the street.
