University of San Andres

The University of San Andres is the leading state university of Bolivia , located in the heart of the country, in La Paz . It was created in the distant 1830 and today it is the second oldest educational institution of the country after the University of San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca (1624).

San Andreas is one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Even a few former Bolivian presidents were once his students. Annually from the walls of this educational institution hundreds of highly qualified specialists come out: lawyers, engineers, doctors, politicians and many others.

Why is the university interesting?

The University was founded on October 25, 1830. From its foundation until 1930 it was official, and already during the period when the rector was Hector Ormache Zalles, from 1930 to 1936, the institution became a municipal property.

The building, which currently houses the university administration, is called the Monoblock, and it is located on Villazon Street. His architect in 1942 was Emilio Villanueva. To date, his creation is considered a vivid example of Bolivian architecture. Construction lasted five years (from 1942 to 1947). Bolivians at first could not accept such an unusual appearance of the building, and therefore Monoblock was criticized for what looked like a skyscraper.

Now this is not just a building with a cult architecture, but also a place for the beginning of social movements. It has 13 floors, two of which are one of the most famous libraries of the country with a huge auditorium, which often conduct various social events. The library was established in 1930.
