Uchuy Kosko

A lot of words have been said about Peru , many and great minds of the world try to unravel the secrets and legends connected with this or that object, many historical and archeological monuments have been studied literally up to molecules, but until now the origin of individual structures remains a topic for discussion. Another of these mysteries is the archaeological site of Uchuy Kosko, about which we will speak.

What is Uchuy Kosko?

Huch'uy Qusqu, literally "little Cuzco" - an archaeological site in the province of Kalka, located north of the city of Cuzco in Peru . The object is located at an altitude of 3,6 thousand meters above sea level, towering above the city of Lamai and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Previously, this place was called Kahya Khavana, later it was known as Kakia Hakihauana.

Uchuy Kosko is a complex of many adobe and stone buildings, terraces and irrigation canals, framed with stones. Some of the buildings reach a length of 40 meters, they were designed to accommodate people, as well as for festivities and ceremonies, the irrigation canal is laid out with stones, its length is about 800 meters. There are allegations that the complex was built in the 15th century by Ink Virakocha and many studies confirm this theory, adding that the creator spent the rest of his days here.

How to get there?

The path to Uchuy Kosko, unfortunately, is impossible on public transport along urban roads, but there are still two starting points through which the path to the complex lies:

  1. From Lamai. The road here is a 3-day route along steep paths with difficult climbs and dangerous descents.
  2. From Tauka the road will take about 3 hours: first you will need to overcome the rise of 4.4 km, then the path lies down.

Many travel agencies organize two-day excursions to Uchuy-Kosko by horse, Peter Frost told about one of these routes in his book "Kosko Research".
