Wine-Picchu

Wine-Picchu is a mountain peak in Peru , located to the north of Machu Picchu . In translation from Quechua, "Wine-Picchu" means "mountain of youth" or "young mountain". It is believed that the buildings on the top of the mountain served as a defensive function; However, some scholars believe that here was located "estate" Pachakutek - influential Inca.

General information about the mountain

With Machu Picchu, Wyna-Picchu is connected by a narrow isthmus; the beginning of the road to the mountain is marked by a large flat boulder, mounted on a pedestal - the Sacred Stone. At the foot of the Wine-Picchu is the Temple of the Moon.

The height of Wine-Picchu is 2721 meters above sea level; from Machu Picchu it is necessary to climb upwards only 360 meters, but since the angle of the rise is steep enough, and some sections of the path are simply dangerous (the ascent to Wine-Picchu is included in the TOP-20 of the most dangerous rises without special equipment), the recovery takes a long time. Some sections of the staircase are cut directly into the rock. In rainy weather, the journey becomes even more dangerous, so it is best to plan the train for a dry period - from May to October. However, rains are also at this time, and even in dry weather, one should be extremely careful.

Stages of ascent

Lifting can be roughly divided into 3 stages: from a checkpoint to the foot of the mountain, agricultural terraces and climbing to the City of virgins.

  1. The first stage is the easiest to overcome, but, nevertheless, it is not too easy to pass it: a narrow and slippery clay path passes through a dense jungle.
  2. Terraces - stone barriers, the height of which is a meter or more. They need either to bypass, or to climb on them (the latter is quite dangerous).
  3. From the terraces to the City of virgins leads a ten-meter tunnel, narrow enough, so full people should not climb into it. On the tunnel in the rainy season there is a stream, so the climb along the tunnel is not only dangerous, but also unpleasant.

The risk is fully justified - when you climb to the top, your eyes will open a stunning view of Machu Picchu; from here it is clearly noticeable that in terms of it it resembles a condor. Also on top is the Urubamba River and its valley. However, in addition to this, there is something to see on Wine-Picchu. There are agricultural terraces in five levels, and besides them there is a platform for rituals, and at the very top is the Inka Tron.

How and when can I visit Wine-Picchu?

Visiting the summit is limited: in day it can make only 400 people. In this regard, tickets must be ordered a few months before the trip (it is better to do this for 5-6 months). Tickets to visit Wine-Picchu are purchased in addition - tickets for Machu Picchu do not give the right to visit the "Young Mountain".

You can start your journey to the summit either from 7am to 8am, if you stop for the night in Machu Picchu, or from 10am to 11am - if you arrive by train from Cuzco . Those who have already visited the summit are recommended to do this at 11-00, because in the morning the clouds fall down and, therefore, from the top you have nothing but them and will not see. Before the beginning of the ascent, you must enter your personal data in a special magazine.

In addition to comfortable shoes, you will definitely need gloves: the path in some places is very slippery, and to avoid accidental falls from Wine-Picchu, you should hold on to special cables that are stretched along it. Also need to stock up sunscreen and anti-insect cream.
