Coricancha

The temple of Coricancha is located in one of the most enigmatic and impressive cities of Peru - Cuzco . To be more precise, from the once majestic temple there were only stone walls, but they also produce a no less grandiose impression.

History of the temple

According to some reports, the temple of the sun Korikancha was built by the Incas back in 1200. This majestic temple complex was notable for its unusual design, perfectly flat masonry and luxurious gold furnishings. It was built in honor of the six main gods of the Incas:

According to the legends, each of the halls was decorated with pieces of gold and silver encrusted with figures of gods, jars with precious stones. The Coricancha Temple in Peru was very important for the inhabitants of Cusco , as it unified the various cultural traditions of all the tribes that lived in this area. But the Spanish conquerors who invaded the territory of the country, by deceit, devastated the once majestic temple complex. In 1950, as a result of a strong earthquake, the ruins of the temple of the sun god Inti were discovered. This is the only thing that has survived from this ancient complex.

Sights of the temple

Like the city of Cusco itself, the Coricancha temple is located in the Peruvian Andes. Getting here, you feel how much the air is discharged, but from this impression from the monument of history become even more vivid. Despite the fact that the temple complex Korikancha was built in the 1200's, even then people were able to build perfectly flat structures. Its basis is made up of rectangular stone blocks, which were once carved from andesite (the rock that was mined in the Andes) and granite. The stones are so precisely aligned with each other that it seems as if they were stacked on a special huge ruler. This same masonry can be seen inside the temple complex. In some rooms, the ceiling has been preserved. By its condition, one can judge how luxuriously this structure was designed. Local residents still believe that part of the gold reserve of the Incas is still kept under the ruins of the temple.

In 1860, the Cathedral of St. Dominicans, built in the style of the Spanish Baroque, was added to the Coricancha temple. But even the skill of eminent Spanish architects can not be compared with the engineering and artistic skills of the ancient Incas.

Once near the temple of Korikancha was broken garden, in which there were many gold and silver figures of animals and birds. Here, even a whole corn field of precious metals was smashed. Now on the territory of the temple you can find only huge boulders and vegetation. After a walk through the territory of the Korikancha sun temple, you can go on an excursion to the archaeological museum, which exhibits exhibits that once belonged to the temple. Here you can see the ancient mummies, ancient religious idols and many other artifacts.
