Lionel Ville's Bridge

The bridge of Lionel Vier in Uruguay has practically no analogues in the world. It is open to pedestrian traffic and motor transport since the mid-1960s and connects Punta del Este to the local resort of La Barra. It is difficult to stay here for a long time, since many people get dizzy.

Notable features of the bridge

The structure is named after its creator, a famous Uruguayan architect, distinguished for his avant-garde thinking. To confuse it with other bridges is almost impossible because of the unusual double undulating bending. Earlier on this place there was a wooden bridge, and then a cement bridge, which collapsed under the influence of the elements.

The bridge is supported by two huge stone pillars, due to which it rises above the waters of the Maldonado stream. The ferry became one of the symbols of Uruguay and even inspired modern designers to create a twin bridge near the original.

The bridge is part of the national highway 10, connecting the country's most important resorts, and is located at the bottom of the stream. When constructing the crossing, a special stretch system was used and a construction technique called "TESA strip", including the creation of three lengths of 30, 90 and 30 m in length. They are backlit and made of special reinforced concrete withstanding the strongest stresses. The width of the motorway bridge with two lanes is 10 m.

How to get to the bridge?

To go to the ferry, it is necessary to go on the highway 10, and in the area of the street Amalia de la Vega turn left. If you get from the west, you will be led to the bridge by the streets of Enrique Campos or Blanca Luz Brum.
