Body mass index for women

Modern trends in the fashion industry are shifting towards venerating the magnificent Rubensian forms, although in everyday life men are still attracted to slender girls. But, as they say, there is no dispute about tastes, there are lovers of women of different compositions. Nevertheless, one of the most discussed problems remains the fight against excessive body weight. In addition, because of the crazy rhythm of life, many women do not have time to watch themselves and instead of sports apply a variety of diets. And here you can already encounter another problem, already of an opposite nature: anorexia. After all, many girls, trying to fit the figure into standard model forms, just exhausting themselves. Therefore, in order not to go to extremes and clearly determine whether you need to gain weight or discard it, there is such a thing as the body mass index, the formula of which is quite simple.

The ideal body mass index, or BMI, helps to determine indirectly how much the height and weight of a person correspond to each other. This index was developed back in 1869 by the sociologist and statistician Adolf Ketle (Belgium), therefore he is also called the Quetelet index. In order to tentatively determine what body weight will be ideal, you can calculate the body mass index, the formula of which is to divide the weight of a woman into her height in meters, squared. That is, the body mass index for women = weight / height2.

For example, a girl weighs 65 kg, and her height is 168 cm. How to determine the mass index of her body? First, it is necessary to transfer the growth from centimeters to meters: 168 cm = 1.68 m. Now we need to raise this figure to a square power: 1.68 m * 1.68 m = 2.8224 m2. Knowing the formula by which the body mass index for women is calculated, we determine it: 65 kg / 2.8224 m2 = 23.03.

Table of body mass index

The first stage in the calculation of BMI for women is completed. And in order for the resulting number to have some significance, a BMI table was developed. Based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the conformity of the body weight and its growth, calculated according to the BMI for women, should mean the following:

It should be understood that, knowing how to determine BMI, it is impossible to find out exactly whether to lose weight or not, since this indicator is relative and does not take into account a huge number of factors. So, the body mass index, the norm of which is in the redistribution of 18-25, may be the same for a complete person and a person engaged in sports. In addition, you need to take into account the age. A woman of the same build as a skinny girl can weigh much more because of certain physiological factors. Quetelet did not take into account gender differences, because his body mass index for women is the same as for men, although a priori, male muscle mass and skeleton should weigh more, and women have more natural fat masses. All these arguments once again proved that the body mass index, the table of which is given above, is very relative.

Body mass index for pregnancy

An interesting fact is that some scientists are convinced that a child whose parents are thin, the probability of being skinny is higher than that of other children. Therefore, it is important to count BMI in pregnancy or planning a child. The definition of BMI for pregnant women helps to find out how much weight a woman can gain in 9 months. With a BMI of up to 20, doctors recommend to gain 13-16 kg during pregnancy, if the body mass index during pregnancy was 20-27, then for this period the woman needs 10-14 kg, with a BMI greater than 27, the weight gain should be even less . But, being in an interesting position, you need to be careful with experiments with weight: during pregnancy, it should not be discarded.
