The time of Valentine's life coincided with the reign of Claudius II, the Roman emperor, who honored the military valor of the legions and did not give Christians much credit. To preserve the military spirit, Claudius II issued a decree forbidding marriage to legionnaires. The emperor believed that the legionnaire who married a lot devotes much time to the family and does not think about military prowess.

Not afraid of imperial wrath, Valentin made peace with the quarreled, gave them flowers and continued to secretly marry lovers.
