Figs - growing outdoors

Despite the fact that the fig is a subtropical culture, it is successfully cultivated in our rather cold territories. Speech, of course, is about growing figs in the open ground, because at home and in greenhouses this plant does not surprise anyone.

The fact is that this fruit tolerates winter temperatures down to minus 20 ° С with the appropriate shelter, and in the summer it feels fine, although it does not give three crops as at home, but only one.

How to grow figs in a garden?

In order to plant the figs in the open ground it was necessary to know some of the subtleties to which the modern Michurinians resort. In the south, this plant can be planted like an ordinary tree or shrub, but here in the northern regions it is better to apply the method of planting in a trench.

Those who for the first time decided to grow figs in the open ground will need to make some physical efforts for this purpose, namely, to dig a 1.5-meter trench for planting the plant. What is it for? That during severe winters the plant does not become frozen and has a good reliable shelter.

So, you need to dig a ditch or pit (if the plant is one) a depth of one and a half and a width of one meter. Digging such a trench from east to west in such a way that the southern slope was at an angle for better access to the sun, and the north is strictly vertical - it needs to be wrapped with a film so as not to crumble and reflect the sun's rays.

On the bottom in the form of a heap, the top fertile soil layer is mixed with humus and chernozem, and a seedling is placed on top, which is buried to the root neck. Thus, figs can grow in the country before the harvest and the onset of cold weather. In October - November, a shelter is constructed over the trench, made of non-woven fabric and removed with the onset of the first warm days.

Monthly the plant requires nitrogen and phosphate root fertilizing, and abundant watering. Twice a month they spray on the leaves to fertilize the plant. For all these manipulations, the figs will respond with a rich harvest, the ripeness of which is determined by the easy separation of the fruit from the stem and darkening of the fig itself.

Complex feeding prevents the fungal diseases of figs (fig trees, fig trees), and insects are not interested in the tree at all, which is a big plus of its cultivation in our conditions. Young shoots are plucked with the beginning of vegetation to form a beautiful crown.
