Gudauta, Abkhazia

Even in the Neolithic era, an agricultural-fishing settlement was established on the shore of Kistriki, and today the picturesque city of Gudauta, the pearl of Abkhazia, is situated on this place. There is a beautiful legend connected with its foundation, telling about a couple in love. Hood and Uta loved each other, but because of obstacles on the part of relatives, they decided to put their lives to death by rushing into the river. Today, about 15 thousand people live in the resort city of Gudauta, 40 km away from Sukhumi. A few years ago, the political and economic situation in Gudauta did not have a rest, but today the city regains its status as a resort, which it has been since 1926. Unfortunately, rest in Gudauta, as well as in the whole of Abkhazia, can not be called comfortable in the full sense of the word, because the tourist infrastructure was destroyed. You will not find luxury apartments here, but a unique climate that offers relaxation all year round, and the hospitable local population alleviate these shortcomings.

Features of recreation in Gudauta

As already mentioned, hotels, boarding houses and recreation centers in Gudauta are very few, but it is for this reason that the beaches in the city and its environs are always free and sparse. They are all free and relatively clean. Beaches in Gudauta are mostly sandy, but there are also sand and gravel. The sand is yellow, there is nobody to sift it. But with food from holidaymakers there will be no problems, as along the coastline and around the city there are numerous cafes and restaurants, ready to offer their customers delicious dishes of national and European cuisine. Be sure to try the Abkhazian wines, famous far beyond the country.

Cultural heritage

Gudauta is rich in its surroundings and outstanding sights. So, on the territory of the village of Lychny, which is only four kilometers away from the resort, a unique architectural complex has been preserved. Here you will see the ancient bell tower, the temple and the ruins of the castle, which were erected in the Middle Ages. The wall painting of the 14th century is preserved in the church.

Here is the castle of the Abkhazian princes of the Charba-Shervashidze dynasty, with whom a legend is connected about the walled lovers. The legend tells that the bodies of two lovers protected the fortress from enemies, making it unassailable. No one can say whether this is fiction or the truth, but the fact remains that no one, except for the elements of nature and time, could harm the fortresses. Today, the walls of the picturesque castle are covered with grass, which gives the building a somewhat mystical look.

The fortress of Hasanath-Abaa, to which the watchtower Bzybskaya is attached, is also preserved. Scientists believe that the buildings are not less than 1200 years old. It is surrounded by a powerful wall, on the inside of which there are traces of ancient frescoes. The area around the fortress is of great value to scientists, since in its depths there are unique finds.

But the Mussersky temple, built in the X-XI centuries, was less fortunate. Today you can see only small fragments of walls. The expressiveness of the southern facade, decorated with arches-entrances, is striking. Despite the ruthlessness of the time, it is easy to imagine how magnificent this temple was. It is located on the territory of the Muisser Nature Reserve, so the excursion to the temple passes through the forest with rare species of trees and shrubs.

With the organization of excursions there will be no problems. There is a lot of office in the city, so you can order a group and individual excursion.

The time spent in Gudauta will forever remain in your memory due to the originality and color of these amazing places.
