Half Moon-Kay is a small coral island, a natural monument, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The island is located in the southwestern part of the Lighthouse Reef atoll, 80 km from Belize City .
Snorkeling and diving
Half Moon-Kay - a fairy tale for snorkelers and diving. Some depths are so huge that the diver has a complete sense of immersion in the abyss. But do not worry, because professional guides will fully prepare you for the dive and will follow your safety.
Do not be afraid and those who do not know how to swim or just afraid of water. The island has stunning shallow beaches. Bathing here is safe and very nice!
For swimming and diving it takes about 2 hours, after which the organizers of the excursion can offer light snacks and fruits. Then - 45 minutes. free time to explore the island. Then follows the move to the famous Great Blue Hole (a 305-meter-deep, 120-meter-deep funnel, flooded by the sea), which also offers diving and swimming.
Fauna of the island
Despite its small size, there is a lush forest on the island, inhabited by an incredible number of birds (more than 100 species!). It is this island that is an ideal place for reproduction of a rare species of birds - red-footed boobies.
The south-eastern part of the island is a nesting place for three species of sea turtles. The nesting season lasts from May to November. Therefore, during this period part of the island will be restricted in access.
Take a note
- since Half Moon-Kay is considered a protected nature reserve, prepare to pay an additional 40 cu. on arrival. For the same reason, it is not recommended to take anything from the island for memory;
- Fishing is not allowed here;
- for a comfortable stay, do not forget to take a hat, sunscreen and glasses.
How to get there?
You can get to the island on a one-day excursion organized by many hotels. All excursions begin in the early morning, tk. The island is open from 08:00 to 16:30.
You can rent a yacht on your own and spend as much time as you want. But do not forget to take with you everything you need: food, clothes, personal hygiene products, because you will not find here no store, no hotel, no person!
You can order a tour by helicopter, having previously negotiated the route of travel with the manager of the helicopter company. With a price, you can (and need to!) Bargain. A flight lasting 1.5 hours will cost you about $ 1500.
