Cactus Haworthia

There are so many species and forms of this plant that even experts have not yet come to a consensus as to how many there are: according to one classification, about 60, and on the other - all 600. The appearance of different haworthias is so different that it is difficult even to believe that they are all related to one kind - from three-centimeter dwarfs to thirty-centimeter giants. But all of them are united by a rather long period of life and the presence of a period of rest.

How to care for the hawarts?

  1. The most intimate of all Haworthias will feel themselves in soils of air and moisture permeability, with a neutral or slightly alkaline level of acidity (7.0-7.5 pH).
  2. It is best if the pot for haworthia is round than square. The fact is that the roots of a plant can rot in the corners of a square pot. The material from which the pot is made is not of decisive importance: at least plastic, though ceramics.
  3. Havortia is fairly well treated with direct sunlight. But still sunbathing should not be abused. The best place for keeping haworthia will be the south-western window sill where the young plant will grow more slowly, but it will acquire a much more beautiful coloring. In summer havortiyu it is quite possible to send "sunbathing" on a balcony or a loggia.
  4. During the period of active growth, Haworthia needs a temperature of + 15 ... + 25. If havortii fall into the conditions of prolonged heat, and even with hot nights, they fall into hibernation. Therefore, in countries with hot climates, the period of rest in Haworthia falls on months with the highest temperature, and then it ceases to water for up to six months.
  5. The irrigation regime for Haworthia is set depending on the conditions of detention. The basic rule is one - the soil in the pot must dry completely between waterings. On average, watering Haworthia should be done once every 1.5 to 2 months. In summer, watering should be abundant, and in winter - very mild.
  6. Every time during watering, except winter rest period, fertilizer for succulents is introduced into the pot with havortia. Another way to provide haworthia with all the necessary substances and microelements is to add slow-acting fertilizer capsules directly to the pot with it. Each time when watering the capsules will gradually give off some of the nutrients. Since watering havortiyu need infrequently, then the fertilizer overdose should not be feared.
  7. Propagation haworthia seeds or separation of daughter outlets. Some types of haworthia form the children very reluctantly, so they can try to reproduce with a sheet handle. It should be remembered that the rooting of such a cut may last for up to six months.
  8. What diseases and pests can the owner of Haworthia face? The most common problem is the plant's loss of decorativeness after a long stay in a poorly lit room. In this case, the plant must be cut off and provided with sufficient sunlight. During the long winter, the roots of Haworthia can completely die out. In this case, the plant can be saved by replanting it in a pot with fresh and well-fertilized soil. In very rare cases havortiya can suffer from aphids and scabies , which can be cured with the help of special preparations.
