Reproduction by layers

One of the most ancient ways of reproduction of plants is reproduction by layers. Its essence lies in the fact that even before separation of the stem from the mother plant, the formation of roots on it is stimulated. For the multiplication of plants by layers it is important to choose the correct shoots and a site for their rooting with suitable soil.

To get good layers, it is necessary to take measures to form a powerful stalk with strong roots. And in order to stimulate the rooting of the shoot, gardeners use such techniques as hilling of vertical layers or preliminary pruning. When carrying out the hilling, it is necessary as soon as possible to stop the access of light to the stalk, this is an indispensable condition for the growth of roots on the layer. If preliminary pruning is carried out, it must be remembered that in vegetative propagation by layers, branches bend to the ground.

If you are planning a regular plot in the garden to obtain the layers, then the ground must first be thoroughly digged for better drainage. To accelerate the reproduction, you can cut off the shoots, then all the forces of the plant will go to the growth of the root system. 3-4 weeks before the planting, the layers are neatly separated from the main plant. When they are well rooted, they are carefully removed, shoveling the ground with pitchforks.

Propagation by air layers

Another way of vegetative propagation is the multiplication of plants by air layers. With it, the roots should be formed on lignified, unseparated shoot. For this type of reproduction, at a distance of 25 cm from the top of the shoot, the bark is removed round and round, and this place is covered with moist and warm earth, or, even better, moistened with sphagnum moss. Over it, you can wrap it with a black film to keep moisture and high temperature. Soon on this site begin to grow roots. Then a well-rooted shoot is separated and planted in a pot.

The method of reproduction by layers is well established in the reproduction of grapes. Escape is instilled, not separated from mother's bush. The advantage of this reproduction is that it is very easy to lay a grapevine on the ground, and grapes obtained from such a layer can bear fruit for the second year. This way of reproduction can replace low-value varieties for more valuable ones and even move the bush of grapes to another place.

Reproduction of roses by layers can also be made, however, not for all varieties. To do this, the rose should have a long elastic stem. Climbing, ground cover and climbing roses are best.

Using the method of reproduction by layers, any gardener can get new plants for his plot.
