Heparin ointment is a medicinal product for external use, which belongs to the group of direct anticoagulants. Consider in what cases this tool is used, how it works and what contraindications it has.
Composition and action of heparin ointment
Heparin ointment has a combined composition in which the main active substances are:
- heparin sodium;
- benzocaine;
- benzyl nicotinate.
Also, the ingredients of the ointment are auxiliary substances: glycerin, petrolatum, stearin, peach oil, purified water, etc.
Heparin sodium is a substance that exerts antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous action. It promotes resorption of existing blood clots and prevents their formation, acting directly in the bloodstream, activating anti-coagulants and blocking the synthesis of thrombin.
Benzocaine has a local analgesic effect, reducing the severity of pain that occurs when the vessels are clogged and their walls are inflamed.
Benzylnicotinate is a vasodilator that helps to better heparin absorption, expanding the surface vessels.

The method of application of heparin ointment
Ointment is applied a thin layer on the affected area and carefully rubbed into the skin 2 - 3 times a day. The course of treatment is 3-7 days, sometimes more.
