The active substance of the drug is pyrantel pomate. Auxiliary components depending on the form of release:
- Tablets: gelatin, starch arabic gum, colloidal silicon dioxide, propylparaben, methylparaben, sodium starch glucoate, talc, magnesium stearate.
- Suspension: purified water, sodium methylparaben, sodium propylparaben, saccharin sodium, sodium citrate, sodium chloride, sucrose, citric acid, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, polysorbate 80, sorbitol 70%, chocolate essence.
After taking the drug is poorly absorbed from the digestive tract, it is excreted through the intestines and kidneys.
How does the worm come out after Pirantel?
The drug acts on both mature parasites and individuals of the early phase of development of both sexes, but does not affect the larvae in the migratory stage.
The mechanism of action of Pirantel is based on the blocking of neuromuscular conduction in worms. Those. parasites lose the ability to move and are withdrawn along with feces, and additional manipulation to remove them from the body is not required. Also, no special preparation is required for taking the drug.
How do adults take Pirantel?
According to the instructions for tablets and suspensions from Pyrantel worms, the dosage of the drug depends on the age and weight of the patient, as well as the type of parasitic infestation.
With ascariasis and enterobiosis, pyrantel is taken once in such a dosage:
- adults with a body weight of up to 75 kg - 3 tablets or 15 ml of suspension;
- adults with a mass of more than 75 kg - 4 tablets or 20 ml of suspension.
With ankylostomidosis the drug is taken in dosage at the rate of 10 mg / kg of body weight per day for 3 days.
In severe forms of non-caratosis, Pirantel is taken in dosage at the rate of 20 mg / kg of body weight for 2 days.
Pyrantel should be taken during or after meals, thoroughly chewing the pill and washing down with a little water.
Pirantel during pregnancy
During pregnancy and during lactation, the drug should be used with extreme caution. information on the penetration of the drug through the placenta and into milk is not obtained. Based on this, Pirantel can be used under the supervision of a doctor in cases where the benefit to the mother exceeds the possible risk to the fetus. Breastfeeding mothers should stop breastfeeding for the period of treatment.
Pirantel - contraindications and side effects
The only contraindication to Pirantel indicated in the manual is hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Basically, the drug is well tolerated, even in children
- vomiting ;
- nausea;
- lack of appetite;
- diarrhea;
- abdominal pain.
When appointing Pirantel, it should be borne in mind that this drug is incompatible with piperazine and levamisole (when combined with these substances, the effect of the drug is weakened).
