Witch's well

In Estonia there is one tourist attraction , which especially attracts tourists with its originality. It is a Witch's well, or Noiakaev in Estonian, which is in the village of Tuhala.

What is interesting about the well?

The well was built in 1639, and right beneath it flows a river, the depth of which is 9 m. To get to the settlement of Tukhala, it is necessary to get to the Karst Nature Reserve of the same name. In appearance, the well, whose depth is 2.5 m, is no different from the others.

But sometimes miracles happen, water starts to pour from him, like from a real geyser. The jet is so powerful that sometimes reaches a height of 1.5 m. According to local superstitions, the incidents are connected with evil forces. According to the old-timers, these witches started water procedures underground.

An attraction that has made the country famous

The village of Tukhala became popular among tourists thanks to an ancient well. Each traveler seeks to visit the well and see the famous eruption of water. In normal condition, the structure does not look awesome. But it's worth the water to begin to rise from under the ground with hissing, as calmness is disturbed. It completely floods the space around the well, so it becomes impossible to get to it.

A scientific explanation for the phenomenon was given when geologists studied the terrain and found out that under the well and the whole district there are many karst caves. The depth of the largest Virulase is 54 m. Under the ground, there are also real rivers that are replenished with melted snow, prolonged rains. Therefore, witches, according to legend, decided to swim here, absolutely nothing to do with. In fact, everything is much simpler - during the flood the underground river is filled with water, which comes from the Mahtra marshes. In search of an outlet, she breaks through the well outside.

The problem is that the Witches' well in Estonia is inconstant, so it turns into a geyser extremely spontaneously. Once this happened at Christmas, and the other at the end of July after heavy rains.

Other interesting facts about the well

The witch well is famous not only for the eruption of water, but also for the presence of an energetically strong place. This is even evidenced by a special granite slab with the inscription in Estonian and the date of detection (2001). Because of the close location of the karst caves, energy columns appear, with a diameter of 80-90 cm, with a very strong electromagnetic field.

Around the well there are cult stones, the age of which is 3000 years. Because of them, scientists believe that the place was used for medical and ritual purposes, why the volost was called "Witch" from time immemorial.

Looking at the Witches' well, you should take a walk around the neighborhood, so here you can see many more interesting things. For example, a river that goes underground, ancient burials and a church. You can go and on the garden near which one of the oldest roads, built in the third century, is located.

How to get there?

To get to the well, you need to leave Tallinn and keep your way towards the Tukhala reserve, which is 25 meters away. This will most conveniently be done by car.
