Not far from Petrozavodsk, which is the capital of Karelia, are the world famous mineral springs, therapeutic mud and glandular water of which have unique healing properties. No wonder that in this place Emperor Peter I opened the first such resort in Russia called "Marcial Waters".
History of the Karelian resort
For the first time in the XVIII century, a source of mineral water was discovered by a peasant who suffered from heart disease. He claimed that he was cured by drinking healing water from it. The royal court doctors examined the water and confirmed its useful properties. Peter I several times came to these places for treatment with his whole family. By his first visit, three palaces with a large number of rooms connected to sources were built here from wood. Therefore, the village next to the springs were called Palaces, and the glandular springs were named after Mars, the god of war and iron.
Today, near some of the sources preserved pavilions built in Peter's times. In addition, the church of the Apostle Peter with the bell tower above it survived. In 1946 on their base the museum of the resort "Marcial Waters" was created. The exposition of the museum tells about the creation and development of the resort.
Sanatorium "Marcial Waters", Karelia
The "Marcial Waters" balneological resort is located near the village with the same name among the beautiful pine trees, because everyone knows that Karelia is a country of lakes and forests.
