Port of Koper

The Port of Koper is the main sea gate of Slovenia , through which active trade is conducted. It is also the main tourist attraction, because here buildings and structures of the times of the Venetian Republic have been preserved. What is interesting about the port of Koper?

Port of Koper is located between the two major seaports of Europe - Trieste and Rijeka. It was founded around the beginning of the 11th century and is still functioning today. The port covers an area of ​​4,737 m², which includes 23 berths, from 7 to 18.7 m in depth. There are 11 specialized terminals in the port, but there are also reserve terminals, which occupy an area of ​​11,000 m².

Port of Koper continues to develop - new piers appear, and old ones are lengthened. The total volume of cargo processing increases from year to year. On the territory of the port there are covered warehouses, as well as open storage facilities, an elevator and tanks for liquid cargo. Through the port of Koper pass such goods as fruits from Ecuador, Colombia, Israel and other countries, equipment, coffee, cereals. Here ships come even from the Middle East, Japan and Korea. Works well and sea transport, thanks to which tourists can get to Italy and Croatia.

Port of Koper began to develop rapidly when the territory was part of the Venetian Republic. When the Habsburg monarchy swallowed up the area, he was given the title of the imperial Austrian port. Successful trade was conducted until the nearby ports of Trieste and Rijeka were declared free.

After that, trade through the port of Koper gradually came to naught, until its status and future were resolved by the London Memorandum of Mutual Assistance in 1954. During the period of inactivity, the port fell into decay, so it took decades to restore the terminals. By 1962, Koper's throughput was 270,000 tons.

At the present time, the port is an important connecting point in Slovenia's trade with other countries. Cruise ships with tourists are moored here. The port is conveniently located, close to two international airports . Portorož Airport is 14 km away, and Ronchi Airport is 40 km away.
