The medieval castle Otočec ( Slovenia ) is located 7 km from Novo-mesto . This is one of the oldest buildings in Slovenia, the first mention of it dates back to 1252 year. The castle was erected in a picturesque place - on a small island, surrounded by the river Krkoy. This explains the name of the castle, from the Slovene "otok" means "island".
History of the erection of the castle
The Otočec Castle was founded by the Fraser bishops in the 12th century, as they had owned this place for two centuries. Originally, the castle was built for defensive purposes, because it was an outpost because of its location. Since the fourteenth century, Otočec has taken possession of one noble family, then another. Each new owner tried to change the appearance of the structure to his own taste, but not always these attempts turned out to be successful.
The central part was built around the XIII-XIV centuries, then the main building was surrounded by a wall, which was subsequently demolished. The most significant innovations were the drawbridge and the murals of the chapel. The latter appeared in the XVII century and were performed in the Renaissance style. In the same century, the interior of the castle was completely changed. Why the building became more like a nobleman's estate.
Otočec came to desolate during the Second World War after a fire. Restoration began only in 1952, it was successful. Now the castle is a unique sight in Slovenia , which is an example of Romanesque architecture.
